High Ground — VCE analysis

by Stephen Maxwell Johnson · guide written by Yahav Ben Yosef (raw 50 English, 99+ ATAR)

High Ground is a film, which means the evidence you quote is shot, sound and framing. Students who write only about what characters say are throwing away half the text.

The themes that actually earn marks

Frontier violence and its aftermath

The opening massacre sets everything in motion and the film refuses to let it become backstory. Johnson's interest is in what a founding act of violence does to everyone who survives it, on both sides.

Gutjuk's divided identity

Raised in the mission, returning to Country, trusted fully by neither world — Gutjuk's arc is the film's central question about whether reconciliation is possible on stolen ground.

Landscape as character

The wide aerial shots and the scale of Arnhem Land do argumentative work: they assert continuous presence and belonging, and they dwarf the colonial project. Framing and scale are quotable technique.

Justice, law and revenge

Travis's version of justice, Moran's version, and Baywara's are set against each other with no comfortable resolution — which is why 'does the film offer hope?' is worth arguing rather than answering.

How to write about High Ground

Name the technique and then interpret it. 'The extreme long shot of the escarpment' followed by what it argues about sovereignty is worth far more than describing the same moment as a scene. Two or three well-analysed shots beat a page of plot.

High Ground — common questions

What film techniques should I analyse in High Ground?

Framing and scale above all — the wide aerial shots of Arnhem Land argue for continuous presence and belonging and dwarf the colonial project. Name the technique, then interpret it.

What are the main themes in High Ground?

Frontier violence and its aftermath, Gutjuk's divided identity, landscape as a character, and three competing versions of justice that the film refuses to resolve.

Does High Ground offer hope?

That is the question worth arguing. Travis's, Moran's and Baywara's ideas of justice are set against each other with no comfortable resolution — take a position and defend it.
