by Sophocles · guide written by Yahav Ben Yosef (raw 50 English, 99+ ATAR)
Sophocles tells an audience the ending before the play begins. Everything interesting about Oedipus the King comes from the fact that we know and he does not — so the analysis is never about what happens, only about how the knowing is engineered.

Oedipus curses the murderer, promises to find him, and swears to exile him. Every vow lands twice for the audience. Tracking the irony through his own speeches is the most reliable way to organise an essay.
The prophecy is fulfilled, yet Oedipus chooses every step — to leave Corinth, to kill at the crossroads, to keep investigating. The play refuses to let determinism excuse him, which is why 'was he a victim?' is a live question.
Teiresias is blind and sees; Oedipus sees and is blind; the play ends with self-inflicted blindness that finally coincides with understanding. The motif is dense enough to sustain a whole essay.
Thebes is dying of plague. The chorus keeps the political stakes present, which is why the play reads as being about leadership and hubris as much as about one man's family.
Write about Oedipus's own words as evidence against him. The most sophisticated essays quote his confident declarations — his promises, his accusations of Creon, his contempt for Teiresias — and show how Sophocles makes his character, not fate, deliver the catastrophe.
